In response to the unprecedented need for resources to repair the devastation caused to homes and businesses by the floods in Queensland, Rotary’s business and community networks in Tasmania have gone into full swing.
The Rotary network in the State was the key service group which provided massive support to the victims of the Victorian bushfires, and the call for help from Queensland has again seen clubs throughout Tasmania marshall their resources to urgently organise local assistance.
Rotary Club of Hobart President Tim Short said that the Club and the Hobart City Council have combined their efforts to simplify the procedure for donations to Rotary Tasmania’s Queensland flood relief appeal.
“Tax-deductible donations to the Rotary appeal can now be made at the Hobart City Council Customer Service Centre at 16 Elizabeth Street”, Tim said.
He also said that the Club has made similar arrangements with the City of Clarence so that eastern shore residents can make tax-deductible donations at the Clarence Council office in Rosny Park.
Premier David Bartlett has also announced that the State Government will match donations to Rotary’s fundraising on a dollar for dollar basis up to $250,000, so Tasmanians supporting the Rotary appeal have the chance to see the value of their contributions doubled.
The Queensland floods have been described as the nation’s worst natural disaster on record, and the need for support of families and small businesses in particular will be on a scale that is not yet able to be calculated.
“Rotarians will be working to provide every avenue of assistance possible in response to this terrible tragedy, and we call on all Tasmanians to support the effort to build the funds needed for the months and years ahead”, Tim Short said.
