It was a balmy evening and a glittering night.  Marking two centenaries, guests respectfully remembered the sinking of the Titanic while celebrating the launching of the Cartela.  Members of the Rotary Club of Hobart transformed the Cartela into a grand dining room, and offered Titanic themed items for a fundraising auction.  Captain Smith, also known as our Lord Mayor, Damon Thomas, welcomed one hundred guests dressed for the times of 1912, to the Captain’s reception .  Then with the help of MC John X, entertainer extraordinaire, guests were treated to a formal, four course dinner.  Captain Smith performed a ‘marriage’ and provided a history commentary on the events of April 14th, 100 years ago.

Funds raised, all of which will be reinvested into our local and international community, amounted to $11.000.

Hobart Womenrs ShelterThe Rotary Club of Hobart has today committed $5,000 to the Hobart Women’s Shelter towards the cost of fixing the devastating vandalism of one of the Shelter’s Claremont Emergency Refuge Units.

Hobart Women’s Shelter staff were overwhelmed when they discovered the senseless damage to the recently stocked unit last week, and the Rotary Club has resolved to respond immediately to assist the essential work of the Shelter.

Club President Sue Hickey said today that the Claremont units provide emergency relief for women and their children for between two to six weeks, and are an essential component of the Hobart Women’s Shelter’s support of women who are assessed as being in serious danger.“The Rotary Club of Hobart is providing immediate assistance to the Hobart Women’s Shelter to ensure that there is minimal disruption to the Shelter’s vital community work as a result of this appalling destruction”, Sue Hickey said.

The Rotary Club of Hobart is Tasmania’s largest community service club – it raises and distributes in excess of $100,000 each year for local, national and international project support
